Business to Business – National small business week and the 3/50 project
What three independently owned businesses would you miss if they disappeared? Think about it for a minute. Would it be your favorite gift shop, restaurant or convenience store? How long would it be before you knew it was even gone? Are you the kind of consumer who looks for the
Just what I thought – Where do old cars go?
I am a proud owner of a 1956 Chrysler, which still looks good and runs well. Not bad for a 56 year old car. I wish I could look as good and run as well as that classic old Mopar, and unlike me it will continue to look great the
Newman’s K9 Corner – Another thought about abuse
Last week I wrote about dog abuse. My column titled “the many faces of dog abuse” helped me vent about things that I see in the news in addition to the things I see as a professional groomer that also constitute as abuse. But those instances are just the tip

Lee in middle of great C baseball race
When the baseball season began, Coach Randy Harris was hoping for a respectable season from a Lee Academy team that featured eight freshmen and sophomores. Lee has already exceeded the coach’s expectations. The Pandas went into Wednesday’s game against Mattanawcook with a 6-6 record, and are in the running for
Beantown Breakdown – Chad Ochocinco – The Sideshow
Chad Ococinco, or Johnson, or whatever his official name is these days is back in the news. But, once again, it’s not for anything that he’s done on the football field. Apparently he had some spare time in his offseason he’s supposedly dedicated to “really” learning the Patriots offensive playbook
Sporty Sermon – Mother’s Day: It’s not about the money
Like most, I spent last Sunday with my wonderful mother. My sister and I decided together on a gift, flowers, card, etc. It was a day spent as a family with very little money spent. For me, days like this are not about how empty my wallet can get, but

Small Biz Profile – The Yard Sale
Rather than profile a single business this week, I’ve decided to talk about a seasonal industry that flourishes each year in our area: The Yard Sale. The 2012 season is just kicking off, and people all across the Penobscot Valley are gearing up for their weekly shopping excursions. Yard Sale-ers (Sailors?) range from the casual
Biz Profile – The Dog Doc
A few weeks ago I wrote about my little dog Zacky and our visit to Salmon Brook Grooming. He recently afforded me the opportunity to visit another local business, and thought I’d give you a run down on how it went. My wife and I have owned many cats in

Biz Profile – Coldstream Photography
I’m a sucker for an old barn. It could be because I grew up with paintings of them all around my house. My uncle is D. Crosby Brown – the artist who painted the large logging painting in the McDonald’s in Lincoln – and my parents owned quite a few
Biz Profile – Salmon Brook Grooming
I have a hairy little dog. I know that isn’t a particularly rare attribute for a dog, as almost every breed comes fully equipped with follicles. But my dog (Zaccheus – or Zacky for short) is a Peek-a-Poo, which is a cross between a Pekinese and a Poodle. Why anyone

The Barn Door – The life of a Mom
Mother’s Day has come and gone and I hope brought each Mom a special feeling. In talking to a few friends about Mother’s Day, I came to realize how differently each person felt about it. Doors were beginning to open and to close for each person in a special manner. Take the young mom who
Outdoors in Maine – Those Spring Ticks
Ticks in northern Maine? It was not so long ago that Mainers north of Augusta worried about as much about ticks as they did timber rattlers. But today ticks, having hitchhiked their way northward, are here in this part of Maine. You’ll find them on your dog and, if you
The Outdoor Notebook – Canoes Add Fun to Spring Activities
I’ve mentioned in these pages before that I have a fondness for canoes. For my money, nothing quite matches the sense of Maine history, the aesthetic qualities, and the usefulness in such a wide variety of applications unique to this ancient early American invention for water transportation. Let’s get the
Outdoors in Maine – The Old Vest
As I get older, it gets tougher and tougher to part with favorite items that have served me well in the woods and on the waters. Maybe it’s because of a personal incident that occurred early in my marriage. Once I had a well-worn flannel shirt that suddenly disappeared from
The Outdoor Notebook – Frost Hinders Fiddlehead Growth
Fiddleheads are appearing a bit early this year and it’s a mixed blessing. On the one hand, being able to pick these delectable ferns sooner is a boon for those of us starved for fresh green things in the spring. On the other hand, it seems that every other night
