Local Students Collect Tabs For Ronald McDonald House

Ella P. Burr Pop Tabs

Jillian Harris and Max Jipson from Ella P. Burr School in Lincoln hold up some of the many pop tabs 3rd graders have been collecting since fall for the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor.

LINCOLN–Third graders at the Ella P. Burr School in Lincoln recently learned about the Ronald McDonald House, and for a service learning project decided to collect pop tabs until the end of the school year.

The Ronald McDonald House in Bangor provides inexpensive or free housing to families that have seriously ill children. They are non-profit organization and rely on donations to help families stay close to their children during their treatments and recovery.

One of their most important fund raisers is pop tab collections by school children. Classes will come up with their own strategies such as keeping graphs on their progress, using persuasive writing to encourage participation, creating posters to put around the school and community, and weighing the tabs monthly to keep track of their progress. Some Ronald McDonald House chapters raise thousands of dollars per year through collecting tabs.

If you would like to help, save the pop tabs from your aluminum cans and drop them off at the school or send them in with your children. Collection containers will be in every classroom.
