Letter to the Editor

Tuesday, November 6th, you will be asked to vote on the proposed 2012-2013 R.S.U. No. 67 budget and the proposed purchase of the Carl Troutt School in Mattawamkeag. It is our hope that you will approve the $12,196,153.00 budget, which is lower than the budget in 2009, and the purchase of the Carl Troutt School to ensure all our students receive the very best education we can offer.

Federal and State public school mandates have created financial challenges for us. Despite this, we have continued to improve our instruction and facilities. Our schools have received various upgrades, energy efficient windows, new playground equipment, new computers and overall improvements. It is imperative we continue to maintain our facilities at their best. We should take pride in the fact that it is often remarked by others that our buildings, despite being older facilities, are in excellent shape, and we continue to provide up-to-date programs and equipment for instruction for our students.

We are very pleased with the success of the Carleton Project/R.S.U. No. 67 collaboration. This opportunity has provided a pathway for students who have difficulty in a large school setting. Their success is our success. We have outgrown our space at Region III. We must continue to offer new and exciting opportunities and challenges to all our students. To that end, the R.S.U. No. 67 Board of Directors recommends we purchase the Carl Troutt School in Mattawamkeag for $1.00. The expansion of this program and others like it will allow us to take students from other areas in the region on a tuition basis. The additional revenue generated will support the operational costs of the school and provide money for other district-wide programs. No costs for the opening of the Dr. Carl E. Troutt School will be passed on to the taxpayer, as the district’s Capital Maintenance and Fuel Reserve accounts are more than sufficient to cover any repairs. Please give your support to all our students and approve the purchase of the Dr. Carl E. Troutt School.

Our students are the future of our communities. They need to be ready to meet the global, economic challenges of our times. By building a new vision for 21st century teaching and learning that is more responsive to the needs and desires of today’s young adults, we will provide the tools necessary for all our students to meet those challenges.

As you go to the polls, please remember: it is more important than ever to have community support to ensure that the children of R.S.U. No. 67 have access to high-quality academic and athletic programs. For more information about the Carl Troutt School/Carleton Project, please call the District Office at 794-6500 or go to the district’s web page at www.rsu67.org, click on the “Superintendent’s News” link, and then select the “Carl Troutt School Acquisition” link.

Thank you for your support,

Denise Hamlin
R.S.U. No. 67 Superintendent of Schools

I would vote to pass the budget but Won;t vote to accept the Mattawamkeag school—-so I guess I will vote no to the whole thing. This looks like it will cost the taxpayers a lot in taxes and with the mess at the Town Hall we donlt know how much it will be this year.
